IEEE ComSoc regret to announce that 
Salah <http://www.comsoc.org/e-news/2003/feb/SalahAidarousTribute.pdf> Aidarous <http://www.comsoc.org/e-news/2003/feb/SalahAidarousTribute.pdf> passed away on January 21.˙ 
Salah was an outstanding contributor to the 
IEEE Communications Society and 
tremendously active, especially in the 
areas of conferences, lecturing, and writing.

2. Newsworthy events

On January 30th 2003, the IEEE Standards 
Board announced the 802.16a standard  <http://standards.ieee.org/announcements/80216abwa.html>for 
fixed broadband wireless access (BWA) 
between 2 and 11 GHz.˙ This is an extension 
of the 802.16 standard, which was approved 
on Dec. 6, 2001 (and was belatedly announced 
in the Feb. 2003 issue of e-News).
